Mice homozygous for a targeted mutation display mild anemia and spherocytosis. Mutant erythrocytes are osmotically fragile and show reduced deformability and filterability as well as increased membrane fragmentation and selective loss of spectrin and actin from RBC membrane skeletons and vesicles.
