Mice homozygous for a targeted deletion of this gene are viable and fertile. Surprisingly, cornified envelope assembly is not inhibited and adult homozygotes show no obvious pathological phenotype in skin or other epithelia, despite a slight delay in barrier acquisition during embryonic development.
