Mutant mice exhibit defects in antioxidant defense that manifest as hemolytic anemia and malignancies. The phenotype is more severe in homozygous mutant mice, which die prematurely. Homozygous KO reduces susceptibility to chemically induced skin cancer. Mice carrying the peroxidase-dead p.C52S mutation are protected from diet-induced liver steatosis and fibrosis.
