Embryos homozygous for a gene trap allele die shortly after implantation due to defective development of the inner cell mass and the epiblast. Mice homozygous for an exon 19a deletion fail to produce the germ cell-specific isoform but remain viable and fertile with males exhibiting no apparent defects in testis size or spermatogenesis.
