Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit no obvious phenotypes under standard laboratory conditions. However, upon dietary administration of phytol, mice display elevated phytanic acid levels in tissues, mainly in liver and serum, significant weight loss, absence of abdominal white adipose tissue, enlarged and mottled livers, and reduced hepatic glycogen and triglycerides.
