Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit increased aortic ring sprouting and postnatal retinal angiogenesis, increased tumor vascularization and growth, a highly synthetic, proteolytic, and proinflammatory smooth muscle phenotype under basal conditions, and increased susceptibility to angiotensin II-induced aneurysm formation in the ascending thoracic aorta.
