Mice homozygous for a null allele exhibit a severe impairment of caveolar invagination and increased cardiomyocyte vulnerability to hypoosmotic stress but no obvious cardiac defects or alteration in caveolin-3 levels at the plasma membrane of isolated cardiomyocytes, heart and skeletal muscle. Upon physical exercise, aged mice show signs of skeletal muscle fiber hypertrophy, inflammation, centronuclear myopathy, and necrosis.
