Homozygous disruption of this gene results in abnormal gastrulation and early embryonic lethality. Homozygotes lacking the neurospecific isoform are hypoexcitable and display decreased susceptibility to pharmacologically induced seizures. Homozygotes for a hypomorphic allele die perinatally exhibiting heart defects, including ventricular septal defects.
